Responsibilities

  • The Physician Assistant will be categorized as being on the Dependent Specified Professional Personal Staff and will be subject to all defiitions, privileges and responsiblities found in the Medical Staff Bylaws and Rules and Regulations pertaining to that category.
  • The PA-C will assist in surgery under the direct supervision of the surgeon performing the following acts:
    • Positioning, prepping and draping the patient.
    • Actively assisting the surgeon during the operation by:
      • Maintaining maximum visualization of the operative site for the surgeon by close observation of the operative field at all times, anticipating and retaining the manually controlled retractors in position as set by the surgeon with due regard to surrounding tissues, management of all instruments in the operative field to prevent obstructions to adequate vision, and appropriate sponging and suctioning of the operative field.
      • Assisting the surgeon with surgical procedures; performing tasks such as positioning, prepping and draping of the patient, providing hemostasis, cutting sutures and suturing.
      • Communicating to the operating room staff all information relative to the patient, instruments and/or supplies as may be necessary for the optimal care of the patient.
    • After identification of the patient in the operating room by the attending surgeon, positioning the patient.
    • Incising skin, subcutaneous tissue and muscle layer.
    • Suturing or re-approximating muscle, muscle fascia, subcutaneous tissue and skin; applying appropriate dressings.
  • Performing and recording complete medical history and physical examination on the medical record. The supervising surgeon must countersign the entry within 24 hours of completion.
  • Performing initial evaluation for consultation unless otherwise directed by ordering physician. The responsible medical staff member will evaluate the patient and countersign the consult within 24 hours of the initial consult request.
  • A PA-C may obtain appropriate orders from the supervising surgeon and document these orders in the medical record. These orders must be countersigned by the surgeon within 24 hours.
  • A PA-C may prescribe only those medications allowed within the categories approved by Pennsylvania law and those allowed by the agreement with the supervising surgeon. A PA-C may only prescribe schedule II, III, IV and V narcotics at Grand View Health.
  • A PA-C may perform routine technical procedures, including, but not limited to:
    • Venipuncture
    • Insertion of IV lines
    • Insertion of nasogastric tubes
    • Nasotracheal suctioning
    • Removal of surtures
    • Changing dressings
    • Insertion of foley catheters
  • A Physician Assistant will provide patient and family education.
     

Qualifications

  • A Physician Assistant must be certified by the National Commission on the Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) and must hold a registration as issued by the Pennsylvania State Board of Medicine.
  • A PA-C must have graudated from an AMA-accredited Physician Assistant program, and must hold a current Medical Physician Assistant license as issued by the Department of State, Bureau of Professional and Occupational Affairs.
  • A PA-C will be professionally supervised by a physician who is registered by the PA Board of Medicine as a supervising physician.
  • A PA-C is employed by a surgeon and will carry the required professional liability insurance in amounts determined sufficient by the Board of Trustees (Rules and Regulations of the Medical Staff 7.11-3).
  • A PA-C will function under the provisions of Pennsylvania Act 79, as amended.
