Responsibilities

The Chief Medical Officer (CMO) is a member of the Executive team with the responsibility to strengthen the relationship between the hospital and the medical staff so that delivery of quality, affordable and integrated healthcare services are provided. They will work closely with both members of hospital administrative staff and members of the medical staff to promote medical staff participation in furthering the mission of the organization. They are a key member of the Executive Management Team with the responsibility to participate in planning, leading and supporting all GVH and Executive Management strategies and shall lead the medical staff in support of such strategies.

Essential Functions:
  • Leads the medical staff in the formulation of standards of care, structure for oversight and strategic direction for the quality program, which shall integrate into the overall GVH systemwide quality program. Develops, implements and evaluates clinical practice protocols in collaboration with all pertinent clinical staff, easing the transition to evidence-based practices.
  • Drives the development of a culture of patient safety throughout the medical staff and the entire organization.
  • Continuously implements and drives quality improvement plans with the medical staff to ensure safe and effective care.
  • Ensures compliance of all medical staff functions with all relevant licensing and accrediting bodies.
  • Serves as the Executive Management leader for the design, protocol development and implementation of a clinical integration network for the entire health system and its partners to drive down costs and redesign care to improve the continuum of care in the GVH population.
  • Facilitates communication between the medical staff and hospital administration to ensure positive and productive relationships.
  • Aligns medical staff goals with those of the organization to ensure compliance with all quality, legal and regulatory requirements.
  • Participates in recruitment, selection and evaluation of employed and non-employed physicians, CRNPs and PAs.
  • Remains abreast of emerging models in healthcare delivery. Finds and defines new and innovative strategies to achieve business goals and objectives.
  • Finds opportunities to collaborate and develop clinical integration opportunities to achieve positive outcomes.
  • Applies expertise and leadership to have a positive impact on the delivery of care.
  • Ensures that development plans and programs are implemented and supported. Supports officers and committee chairs to supply leadership for the medical staff.
  • Supports the medical staff in its self-governance and accountability to the hospital board for quality and safety of patient care. Ensures compliance with bylaws, rules and regulations, as well as policies, procedures and behavior standards.
  • Acts as intermediary between hospital programs and physicians to resolve problems related to practice issues, such as infection control.
  • Participates in the review, negotiation and development of physician contracts.
  • Regularly attends all relevant medical staff meetings, administrative team meetings and board meetings.

 

Qualifications

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
  • Master's degree, MBA or Master's in Healthcare Administration.
  • Executive Management experience.

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS:
  • MD or DO with board certification required.
