Under general direction of the Director of Clinical Outcomes and Quality, the Clinical Abstractor performs clinical abstraction and provides technical support for hospital-wide quality management. The Clinical Abstractor serves as the Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Clinical Reviewer and Heart Failure, Afib and Stroke program abstractor.


Essential Functions of Clinical Abstractor:

  • Collects and submits accurate, complete and timely data to appropriate databases is essential.
  • High-quality data compilation, documentation and entry of metabolic, bariatric and obesity medicine data into the MBSAQIP Data Registry Platform.
  • High-quality data compilation, documentation and entry of patients with principal diagnoses of Heart Failure, Afib and Stroke into the appropriate Get With the Guidelines program.
  • Works closely with the program physicians and coordinator or navigators for each program to identify opportunities for clinical quality improvement.
  • Identifies special projects and process improvement.
  • Other populations for abstraction may be added in the future.
  • Responsible for follow-up phone calls to ensure timely and ongoing follow-up for patients.

Schedule: Full time, Monday-Friday 7:30 am- 4:00 pm


Education and Experience:

  • Vocational diploma Licensed Practical Nurse Training or Registered Nurse nursing diploma and over 3 years acute care hospital experience required.
  • Bachelor's degree in Nursing and over 3 years acute care hospital experience preferred.


Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to listen to others.

  • Possesses familiarity with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Power-Point, etc.).
  • Demonstrated time management and priority setting skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills.
  • Self-directed.
  • Competency in the use of a variety of computer hardware and software systems.
  • Ability to achieve & maintain 95% accuracy rate in abstraction required.

License and Certifications:

  • Licensed Practical Nurse licensed in PA.
  • or
  • Registered Nurse licensed in PA required.
