Responsibilities

Under the direction of the Food and Nutrition Service Manager, the Clinical Nutrition Manager ensures the proper clinical and technical operation of the Food and Nutrition Service Department, particularly in the area of patient services. Along with other management team members, the Nutrition Service Manager establishes, implements and evaluates compliance of quality standards. Develops and monitors clinical nutrition area and standards of care. Essential functions of the position may include:
  • Developing and implementing clinical standards of nutritional care according to requirements of JCAHO and Grand View Health policy to ensure quality patient care.
  • Reviewing and approving all written information provided to patients for accuracy and completeness according to the approved diet manual to ensure consistency in communication.
  • Developing and approving patient menu for nutritional adequacy based on current nutritional information to provide a balanced and nutritionally complete meal service.
  • Providing current nutrition information to the clinical nutrition staff, physician, nursing and ancillary departments in order to provide consistently accurate information.
  • Advocating inclusion of nutrition programs in accordance with identified needs to provide total patient care.
  • Approving and/or revising diet manual in accordance with current requirements to ensure quality patient care.
  • Developing short- and long-range goals consistent with departmental organizational policies to provide consistency throughout the department.
  • Orienting, training and developing through in-service programs all personnel in accordance with Human Resources policy.
  • Administering Quality Process and Improvement program for the department in conjunction with the hospital's QP&I program.
  • Planning, developing and monitoring the department in-service program according to JCAHO requirements and departmental standards to ensure a quality food service staff.
  • Compiling and utilizing pertinent operational data to improve efficiency and quality of patient food service.
  • Providing administrative support to and supervising all activities of the area supervisors to ensure a continuity of communications and optimal service.
  • Inventorying and ordering nutritional supplements according to established par levels to provide appropriate levels of use.
  • Conducting meetings with each area of responsibility on at least a monthly basis to provide a means of communication.
  • Disciplining, coaching and counseling departmental employees according to hospital and departmental policy to provide consistent and fair treatment of employees.
  • Participating in budget preparation, along with the manager, to ensure a cost-effective department in accordance with hospital guidelines.
  • Completing other activities assigned by the manager to ensure consistent operation of the department to provide cost-effective quality services.
     

Qualifications

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
  • Bachelor's degree in Food and Nutrition and 3-5 years of clinical dietician experience.
  • 6 months to 1 year of supervisory experience
  • Master's degree in Food and Nutrition preferred, but not required.
