Responsibilities

The Cytology Technologist performs a variety of tests, procedures, microscopic evaluations and related duties, following established practices and standards, in order to obtain data for use in the diagnosis and treatment of disease.

Essential Job Functions of Cytology Technologist:
  • Receives assignments according to established departmental procedures and plans, organizes and prioritizes work duties to accomplish daily objectives.
  • Performs testing procedures and related work according to established protocols and standards with minimal technical and/or data entry error in order to report results to the requesting party.
  • Operates equipment and works with highly technical instrumentation according to established procedures and protocols in order to ensure the accuracy of test results.
  • Performs the duties of the Department Technical Specialist as assigned and in accordance with established standards in order to maintain department productivity levels. Maintains all required laboratory statistics.
  • Maintains departmental files for slides, logs and other test results so that appropriate patient follow-up can be done.
  • Processes/analyzes appropriate proficiency test material, controls, standards and other quality control material according to protocol in order to maintain the testing environment.
  • Takes action in cases of out-of-range controls, discrepancies or unexpected test results in order to provide proper patient care.
  • Maintains adequate levels of department supplies by stocking or notifying supervisor of shortages in order to maximize department productivity and minimize cost.
  • Maintains a working knowledge of laboratory and hospital computer routines.
  • Performs adequacy evaluation and assists physician with specimen collection during fine-needle aspiration procedures.

Schedule: Three 8-hour shifts every two weeks, Monday to Friday, 6:30am-3:00pm
 

Qualifications

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
  • Bachelor's degree or certificate from an approved school of cytotechnology required.


LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS:
  • Credentialed by an agency approved by the National Commission for Health Certifying Agencies (NCHCA), i.e., ASCP, NCA, HEW, etc., upon hire, preferred.
