Responsibilities

• Oversees the management of the hospital's security systems to protect the hospital, patients, employees and visitors, including security IT software, entry access, mass notification and security at all hospital locations.
• Evaluates and delivers educational programs on security policies and communication and emergency management topics to ensure staff is informed and equipped to manage potential security and emergency situations.
• Plans for crisis response, disaster recovery, evacuations, campus lockdowns, workplace violence and other emergency events through proper preparation and training.
• Performs regular security and safety assessments at all hospital locations, owned and leased, to find and mitigate any security vulnerabilities or gaps. Evaluates potential improvements and provides recommendations to senior leadership in a cost-effective manner.
• Works closely with local law enforcement by establishing relationships and communicating regularly. Keeps local law enforcement aware of hospital policies and procedures.
• Oversees the Emergency Management, Safety and Workplace Violence Committees. Works closely with committee members, helping to set up direction and goals that meet the needs of the employees, patients and community.
• Supervises Environment of Care Coordinator and Security Manager, supplying guidance and direction as needed.
• Creates and keeps ongoing training for security officers. Works toward certifying officers through the International Association for Healthcare Security and Safety training course or similar associations.
• Provides staff education related to security, emergency management, incident command, HAZMAT operations and active shooter preparations.
• Plans, requests and administers the department operating budget responsibly. Recommends capital equipment purchases for Security and Emergency Management.
• Serves as the hospital incident investigator. Works closely with law enforcement and hospital leadership to fairly and properly adjudicate difficult situations.
• Acts as the incident commander during emergencies, when necessary.
• Performs regular emergency management exercises to prepare hospital and off-site staff for emergency events. Recommends improvements for hazard mitigation resulting from these exercises.
• Ensures compliance of emergency management, environment of care and security items specific to DOH, The Joint Commission, PEMA and other related regulatory bodies.
• Stays current with safety and security trends by being involved with related hospital organizations and the International Association for Healthcare Security and Safety.
