Under the direction of the Operations Supervisor, the Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) has responsibility for providing Basic Life Support skills and for assisting the EMT-Paramedic in the delivery of pre-hospital patient care for neonate, infant, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric patients in accord with Act 37, rules and regulations, PA DOH EMS protocols and regional and GVH policies and procedures. Responsibilities could include:

  • Functioning as a certified EMT in a BLS or in the Advanced Life Support Unit, performing procedures as outlined by Act 37, PA rules and regulations, and PA DOH EMS protocols, as well as providing quality pre-hospital care to neonate, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric patients.
  • Accepting orders from approved Medical Command physicians and promptly implementing interventions.
  • When appropriate, providing pre-hospital care according to established PA DOH EMS protocols.
  • Maintaining clinical knowledge and skills in order to provide quality care.
  • Participating in performance improvement program.
  • Operating, restocking and maintaining vehicles to ensure a constant state of readiness.
  • Assisting with rescue and extrication of patients. Ability to function safely and effectively in hazardous environments to ensure stabilization and safety of patients and other personnel.
  • Working with local EMS, fire and law enforcement agencies in a coordinated effort on the patient's behalf.
  • When GVH EMS business office is closed, obtaining information and coordinating efforts to arrange ambulance or wheelchair van transportation.
  • Functioning in the Department of Emergency Medicine according to the job description of the Patient Care Technician, under the direction of the professional staff, only when not performing the functions of an EMT.



  • High school diploma/GED required.
  • Completion of an approved Emergency Vehicle Operators course required.


  • Demonstrated written communication skills.
  • Strong verbal communication and listening skills.
  • Demonstrated time management and priority-setting skills.
  • Competency in the use of a variety of computer hardware and software systems.


  • EMT, certified upon hire, required.
  • Driver's license – PA, upon hire, required.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) upon hire required.
  • PHTLS certification upon hire preferred.
