Responsibilities

Under general supervision, the Histologist at Grand View Health prepares specimens for microscopic examination by the pathologist.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS OF HISTOLOGIST:
  • Fixing specimens in formalin or other prescribed fixative solution.
  • Operating and maintaining tissue processor, microtome, cryostat, embedder and reagent recycler.
  • Cutting tissue sections and staining sections using routine and special stains.
  • Examining sample of stained slides with microscope to assess adequacy of staining.
  • Assisting pathologist in gross examination of specimens.
  • Assisting pathologist in preparation of frozen sections.
  • Preparing solutions and reagents in accordance with procedures.
  • Staining bone marrow aspirates using iron stains.
  • Processing/analyzing appropriate proficiency test material, controls, standards and other quality control material according to protocol in order to maintain the testing environment.
  • Logging quality control data with corrective action to aid in compliance with regulatory agencies.
  • Monitoring current quality management indicators to ensure quality patient care.
  • Maintaining adequate levels of department supplies by stocking or notifying supervisor of shortages in order to maximize department productivity and minimize cost.
  • Collecting specimens from the OR.
  • Collecting specimens from medical practices for frozen sections.

 
Schedule: This is a per diem (non-committed) position with hours either 6:30 am to 3:00 pm or 7:00 am to 3:30 pm rotation.
 

Qualifications

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
  • Associate's degree in biological/physical sciences or over 1-3 years of experience in histology.


LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS:

  • Credentialed by an agency approved by the National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA), i.e., ASCP, NCA, HEW, AMT, preferred upon hire.
