Responsibilities

The Insurance Verification Specialist is responsible for obtaining pre-verification of insurance for patients and communicating insurance coverage, eligibility and co-pays to all patients receiving elective procedures. Duties include, but are not limited to:
  • Accurately entering all benefit and pre-certification information required for billing purposes.
  • Utilizing the Referral/Reservation form and Pre-Admission letter to enter pertinent data for maintaining quality information.
  • Obtaining pre-certifications when necessary.
  • Updating insurance information to staff in regards to referral and authorizations should they be required.
  • Maintaining ongoing knowledge of insurance plans by reading insurance memos and bulletins.
  • Ability to recognize patients in financial need and provide charity applications and/or medical assistance applications.
  • Resolving outstanding insurance issues prior to admission.
  • Maintaining pre-maternity lists and insurance work lists to ensure notification of co-pays is sent out to mothers due within 2 months of their expected delivery.
  • Meeting with inpatients that have a balance due before they are discharged.
     

Qualifications

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
  • High school diploma/GED required.
  • Over 1 to 3 years of CPT and ICD coding and insurance billing required.
  • Bachelor's degree in Healthcare Administration, Business or similar field of study preferred.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
  • Demonstrated analytical skills.
  • Demonstrated problem-solving skills.
  • Strong verbal communication and listening skills.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology.
  • Ability to maintain the strictest levels of confidentiality.
  • Ability to work effectively and efficiently under tight deadlines, high volumes and multiple interruptions.
  • Excellent organizational skills.
