The Lead Phlebotomist coordinates activities of the phlebotomy staff, including quality and quantity of work, staffing and inventory control, to facilitate the flow of patients and patient specimens for consistent quality care.

This is a full-time 80-hour position. The hours are 6am-2:30pm with on-call.

Job duties include:
  • Preparing staffing schedules that are adequate to provide uncompromised levels of service.
  • Interviewing and recommending candidates for new or vacant positions in order to maintain section viability.
  • Ensuring that procedure manuals are current and reviewed annually to comply with regulatory agencies.
  • Overseeing and documenting training of new employees.
  • Maintaining a sufficient inventory of routine departmental supplies so that emergency orders are not necessary.
  • In conjunction with the section supervisor, assisting in the employee evaluation process to promote staff development.
  • In order to monitor section and laboratory productivity, providing correct and complete workload statistics.
  • Operating section in the most cost-effective manner possible to support the overall financial structure of the institution.
  • Accurately communicating information from supervisory or other meetings to section personnel in a timely fashion so that the staff is kept abreast of current events.
  • Monitoring current quality assurance indicators to assure quality patient care.


  • Minimum high school diploma/GED required.
  • 3-5 years of hospital laboratory experience.
  • 1-3 years of experience in a leadership role preferred.
  • Completion of a phlebotomy program preferred.
