Responsibilities

The essential functions of the Orderly include:
  • Placing pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric patients in wheelchairs/stretchers/beds and transporting them from one area of the hospital to another, taking into consideration the patient's condition, to ensure safe and efficient patient transportation.
  • Consulting with nurses regarding patients with special problems, such as IVs, provision of oxygen during transport, or any other considerations, as required to ensure safe and efficient patient transportation. Maintaining proper interdepartmental communications.
  • Requesting assistance from nurses to move patients who are in a delicate physical condition or whenever the transporter is unsure of the patient's ambulatory issues to ensure safe patient transportation.
  • Closing doors and pulling cubical curtain, as needed, to respect patient's privacy.
  • Protecting patients with appropriate covers in order to provide warmth and privacy.
  • Utilizing Transports Tracking system in an appropriate and efficient manner.
  • Cleaning wheelchair and stretcher upholstery daily in accordance with the department's infection control policy.
  • Reporting malfunctioning or damaged equipment to supervisor in order to control the quality of the transportation equipment.
  • Assisting with transporting pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric patient belongings when patient is admitted or to maintain good customer relations.
  • Documenting reasons for transporting delay, as necessary, to collect data for departmental efficiency and quality assurance.
  • Checking oxygen tanks on a routine basis and changing tanks as necessary to ensure adequate supply of oxygen during transport.
  • Assisting with transports of bodies to the morgue and assisting morticians with the removal of bodies, following safety precautions.
     

Qualifications

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • High school diploma/GED required.

 

DESIRED SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Strong verbal communication and listening skills.
  • Ability to work as part of a team.
  • Ability to document information on the individual assignment worksheet.
