The Registered Nurse on the Intensive Care Unit assumes accountability and responsibility as a professional nurse for providing total, comprehensive, continuous and patient-centered care for an assigned group of patients. The RN is responsible for the delivery of patient care through the nursing process of assessment, diagnosing, planning, implementation and evaluation. The Registered Nurse functions as a health team member through independent, interdependent and dependent roles within the healthcare system. Serving as the patient's advocate, the RN assumes responsibility and accountability for nursing care for patients of various ages as defined by the department scope of service.
Registered Nurse Job Responsibilities:

Ensures patient safety in the performance of job functions and through participation in hospital, department or unit patient safety initiatives. Takes action to correct observed risks to patient safety.

Reports adverse events and "near misses" to appropriate management authority.

Implements policies, procedures and standards consistently in the performance of assigned duties.

Identifies possible risks in processes, procedures and devices and communicates the same to those in charge.

Displays professional commitment and supports the unit team by promoting unity and teamwork among coworkers by maintaining a positive attitude and positive working relationships.

Fosters a healing environment for patients and families.

Assumes responsibility and authority for establishing a therapeutic relationship with the patient and creating an individualized plan of care. Evaluates patient's response and intervenes to ensure optimal patient outcomes.

Integrates clinical reasoning and knowledge as the foundation for decision-making.

Balances patient's rights and organization's responsibilities in providing professional and ethical care.
Grand View Health's Intensive Care Unit (ICU) is a 14-bed unit that provides comprehensive care for patients with complex health problems. The unit also cares for seriously ill or injured patients who require close observation and constant care.
