Responsibilities

The Department Manager, Med Surg/Tele provides leadership, direction and administration for the Medical Surgical/Telemetry departments. The Department Manager, Med Surg/Tele is responsible for providing guidance in the areas of compliance, safety, quality and nursing practice. The Department Manager, Med Surg/Tele will oversee staff retention, education and competency and will support the professional development of the staff. The Department Manager, Med Surg/Tele will develop and maintain a departmental budget, maintaining high patient satisfaction and acting as a liaison and facilitator to all other clinical areas of the hospital. The Department Manager, Med Surg/Tele will be looking to create and maintain a culture of nursing and service excellence for Medical Surgical/Tele.

Essential Functions:

  • Utilizes strategic planning process to facilitate long-range focus in planning, budgeting, procedure and documentation development.
  • Recommends and participates in establishing structure, goals, objectives and management initiatives.
  • Has knowledge of trends, issues, standards and legalities of hospital and departmental policies and procedures.
  • Interviews, selects and hires personnel.
  • Participates in recruitment and retention strategies and activities.
  • Facilitates the attainment of the goals and objectives.
  • Works collaboratively with other hospital departments and personnel to develop, implement and support quality improvement initiatives and opportunities.
  • Promotes and participates in shared- governance concepts and decision-making process.
  • Evaluates performance of assigned personnel by providing ongoing feedback and annual written performance appraisals.
  • Maintains professional enhancement through independent learning activities, professional networking and attending relevant seminars, conferences or continuing education programs.
  • Provides ongoing counseling and positive discipline in accordance with Human Resources policies, including termination, when indicated.
  • Recommends and participates in fiscal planning activities.
  • Prepares annual operating, capital and expense budgets.
  • Delegates effectively by entrusting responsibility and authority to appropriate managers and staff.
  • Participates and supports organizational changes in a constructive manner.
  • Serves as a resource/consultant to managers and staff in areas of expertise.
     

Qualifications

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
  • Associate's degree in Nursing required.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of experience in a supervisory role required.
  • Bachelor's degree preferred.
  • Five (5) years of experience as a Registered Nurse in acute care setting preferred.

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS:
  • Registered Nurse in PA – licensed required.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) upon hire required.
  • NIH Stroke Certification upon hire required.
  • ACLS upon hire required.
