Pharmacy Technician
Full Time, Variable - Varied start times, 7am-3:30pm, 8am-4:30pm, 12:30pm-9pm, 1:30pm-10pm

Responsibilities

The Pharmacy Technician, under close supervision of a Registered Pharmacist, assists the Pharmacist in routine daily procedures and related pharmaceutical activities. The Pharmacy Technician helps prepare and distribute medicines to patients. The Pharmacy Technician uses technology to help maintain accurate patient records, prepare and package medications, and place orders.

Essential Functions:
  • Fills medication orders accurately to be checked by a Pharmacist so medications can be delivered in a timely manner.
  • Maintains flow of unit-dose drug distribution by obtaining the cart fill list, starting the robot, picking medication from the MedCarousel and exchanging the medication carts.
  • Makes hourly rounds, when necessary, to deliver medications to the nursing units.
  • Enters Pharmacy charges into the computer to achieve up-to-date billing.
  • Performs unit dose packaging duties to maintain inventory and to ensure proper identification of medications is achieved and that the unit dose drug distribution system is intact.
  • Prepares oral syringes, labeling and completing paperwork as required.
  • Works as the IV Room Technician, assisting the Pharmacist in the preparation and dispensing of IV solutions. Demonstrates proficiency by culture samples being negative. Refer to IV Room Technician job description.
  • Reviews and fills floor stock requisitions in an accurate and timely manner in order to have timely delivery to the units.
  • Replaces used medications from Emergency Kits and Code 9 Trays, ensuring all drugs are in date and the correct inventory is present.
  • Assists the Pharmacist by counting the medication, attaching the labels to the vials and the receipt to the bag. Attaches a copy of the label to the prescription with the fill date noted.
  • Checks pick-up bins monthly for prescriptions that have been waiting for a month or longer. Works with the Pharmacist to properly document the return to stock of these items.
  • Restocks automated dispensing machines as required. Performs out-date checks as scheduled.

Qualifications

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
  • High school diploma/GED required.
  • Over 6 months to 1 year of experience as a hospital Pharmacy Technician preferred.

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS:
  • Pharmacy Technician, certified upon hire, preferred.
