Responsibilities

Under the general direction of the Department Manager, the Cardiac Tech I is responsible for obtaining and processing EKGs on infant, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric patients in the following areas: Cardiology, DEM, PACU, ICU, MSSS, Medical/Surgical units and any other physician-ordered area. The Cardiac Tech I is also responsible for correctly applying Holter monitoring devices on all age groups.

Essential Functions:

• Operates all EKG machines according to department standards and able to prioritize workload to obtain satisfactory EKG tracings for infant, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric patients.
• Recognizes malfunctions, troubleshoots minor problems according to policy, and alerts necessary personnel immediately for major problems for prompt correction.
• Understands daily maintenance of equipment and performs tasks, as assigned, promptly and completely to ensure readiness for the next shift.
• Applies Holter monitors on patients according to department standards to obtain a satisfactory 24- or 48-hour tracing.
• EKG paperwork: Processes MUSE reports according to department policy to ensure proper reading and distribution. Notifies appropriate physicians, according to department policy, to do STAT and routine readings and to receive requested reports. Files reports promptly and accurately to maintain an effective file system.
• Recognizes signs and symptoms of heart attack and initiates CPR as necessary.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

• High school diploma/GED and over 6 months to 1 year of overall knowledge of EKG techniques required.

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS:

• Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) within 2 weeks of hire required.
