Medical Lab Technician Generalist - Laboratory

Responsibilities

The Medical Lab Technician performs a variety of diagnostic testing in Hematology, Chemistry, Microbiology and Blood Bank following established practices and standards. Performs phlebotomy as needed. Demonstrates competent knowledge and skills to ensure quality results.

Essential Functions:
  • Receives assignments according to the established departmental procedures and plans. Organizes and prioritizes work duties to accomplish daily objectives.
  • Performs testing procedures and related work according to established protocols and standards with minimal technical and/or data entry error in order to report results to the requesting party.
  • Operates equipment and works with highly technical instrumentation according to established procedures and protocols in order to ensure the accuracy of test results.
  • Performs equipment maintenance and repair according to operator's manuals in order to facilitate testing procedures and avoid downtime.
  • Coordinates with fellow employees as deemed necessary to complete work within acceptable time limits in order to maintain department productivity.
  • Performs several tasks simultaneously during peak workload periods in order to maintain department productivity.
  • Learns new procedures in a reasonable time frame, usually one working week, in order to maintain adequate technical skills.
  • Assays appropriate controls, stands and other quality control material according to protocol in order to maintain the testing environment.
  • Takes actions in cases of out-of-range controls, discrepancies or unexpected test results in order to provide proper patient care.

Schedule: As needed Saturday and Sunday, 11:00pm to 7:30am
 

Qualifications

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
  • Bachelor's in Medical Technology or Associate's degree in Clinical Laboratory Sciences or equivalent required.
  • Blood Bank experience required.
  • Minimum of 1 year of clinical laboratory experience preferred.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
  • Receives assignments according to the established departmental procedures and plans. Organizes and prioritizes work duties to accomplish daily objectives.
  • Performs testing procedures and related work according to established protocols and standards with minimal technical and/or data entry error in order to report results to the requesting party.
  • Operates equipment and works with highly technical instrumentation according to established procedures and protocols in order to ensure the accuracy of test results.
  • Performs equipment maintenance and repair according to operator's manuals in order to facilitate testing procedures and avoid downtime.
  • Assays appropriate controls, stands and other quality control material according to protocol in order to maintain the testing environment.
  • Performs venipunctures according to established protocols and procedures so as to provide the best possible specimen for analysis.
  • Instructs clinical students and new employees as needed to maintain adequate proficiency.
  • Covers on-call time or other shifts in times of emergencies/shortages in order to maintain laboratory minimum staffing levels.
  • Performs other duties as assigned in order to ensure that departmental objectives are fulfilled.

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS:
  • Credentialed by an agency approved by the National Commission for Health Certifying Agencies (NCHCA), i.e., ASCP, HEW, HCA, upon hire, required.
