The Blood Bank Supervisor supervises and coordinates the activities in the Blood Bank area. The Blood Bank Supervisor's duties include, but are not limited to, establishing procedures and methodologies, quality assurance, staffing and inventory management. The essential functions for the Blood Bank Supervisor are:

Essential Functions:

  • Participates in laboratory and hospital-wide CPI activities to ensure quality patient care.
  • Ensures the technical competency of the section staff by developing and maintaining training checklists, orienting and training new staff members, and assessing competency.
  • Interviews and recommends candidates for new or vacant positions in order to maintain.
  • Participates in the employee evaluation process to promote staff development.
  • Operates section in the most cost-effective manner possible to support the overall financial structure of the institution.
  • Covers on-call or other shifts in time of emergency/shortage in order to maintain laboratory minimum staffing levels.
  • Assists in the development of the section budget to include manpower, capital requirement and operational expenses in order to help fulfill the fiscal responsibilities of the laboratory.
  • Directs the evaluation and implementation of new test methods, procedures and equipment in order to keep the section current with established laboratory practices.
  • Functions in the positions of section staff, when required, to maintain section productivity and standards of patient care.



  • Bachelor's degree in Medical Technology and over 5 to 7 years of blood bank experience required.
  • And over 3 to 5 years of experience in leadership role required.

  • Possesses strong technical aptitude required.
  • Demonstrated time management and priority setting skills required.
  • Demonstrated written communication skills required.
  • Strong verbal communication and listening skills required.
  • Effective interpersonal skills required.


  • Credentialed by an agency approved by the National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA), i.e., ASCP, NCA, HEW, AMT, upon hire, preferred.
