Under general supervision, the Teacher’s Aide/Substitute Teacher assists the Head Teacher, Teacher and Assistant Teacher in the classroom in caring for and instructing the children and in planning and supervising activities as needed. The Teacher's Aide is responsible for maintaining a clean and safe environment, both indoors and outdoors; developing a better understanding of children; and growing professionally as a child care worker. Responsibilities may include:

  • Demonstrating imagination and creativity while providing activities for children that include experiences in social, emotional, intellectual and physical stimluation on a daily basis as directed by the Teacher or Head Teacher.
  • Designing and integrating stimulation and relaxation in the classroom schedule on a daily basis as directed by the Teacher, Head Teacher or Manager in the development of a well-balanced program.
  • Changing diapers, guiding children in toileting routines (if necessary) and rest times, and providing guidance in eating (by modeling appropriate eating behaviors and manners) on a daily basis as directed by the Teacher and Manager to foster stimulation in children.
  • Assisting the Teacher or Head Teacher in the preparation, distribution and clean-up of all meals and snacks on a daily basis to comply with state regulations.
  • Providing outdoor activities or gross motor activities indoors during inclement weather, on a daily basis as directed by the Teacher, Head Teacher or Manager to enhance overall physical development.
  • Assisting in making classroom materials and replenishing supplies and materials when needed or as directed by the Teacher or Head Teacher to supplement the cirriculum.
  • Interacting appropriately with children as a facilitator during free play time, when necessary, to foster social development.
  • Recognizing that every child's attention span and abilities are different and treating each child in a different but equal manner on a daily basis to ensure fairness.
  • Supervising aides and volunteers in the Teacher's or Head Teacher's absence or when directed by the Manager to maintain the routine of the program.
  • Assisting in the preparation and writing of biannual evaluations of the children and submitting them to the Teacher or Head Teacher prior to meeting with the parents at conference times.
  • Maintaining ongoing activity records on each child as directed by the Teacher or Head Teacher to be used in future evaluations.



  • High school diploma/GED required.
  • 1-3 years of experience related to the care and development of children required.
  • Expands knowledge of early childhood growth and development process by completing a total of 6 hours of DPW-approved, in-service training(s) each year preferred.

  • First Aid and CPR preferred upon hire.
  • Renewal of CPR and First Aid certifications based on state regulations required.
